La Scène de recherche is pleased to present the first play selected during the last season by its programming committee, composed of students, faculty members, and administrative and technical staff.
Director Margaux Eskenazi draws on philosopher Gilles Deleuze and his famous lecture at La Fémis on March 17, 1987, to rediscover faith in theater. Is the act of creation an act of resistance?
Against a backdrop of wood and flowers, bathed in chiaroscuro, the famous French philosopher comes to life. Dressed in a kimono and wielding a katana, he gradually transforms into a rōnin from Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai and questions his place in society. 
Straddling the personal, the political, and the poetic, this production explores the meaning of our actions and invites us to rethink our commitments in a world in crisis.

Eleven audience members joined us to see performances at six theaters in the region before selecting one to be featured at the Scène de recherche. They unanimously chose GILLES, or What Is a Samurai?

Discover Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece, Seven Samurai (1954).
The tranquility of a small Japanese village is disrupted by repeated attacks from a band of marauders. In desperation, the villagers decide to hire seven masterless samurai, rōnin, to protect them. Gradually, the samurai integrate into the village in an atmosphere of trust and train the villagers as they prepare to fight alongside them.
